My favorite piece last night was a video created by Artists Without Walls. CCTV cameras focus on the same spot on both sides of the Separation Wall in Abu Dis, a Palestinian village in East Jerusalem. People gabbed away on cell phones, jumped in jubilation, clapped to hear others clapping, and smoked cigarettes while outstretched in lawn chairs. A magical window opened. Bodies appeared on the wall; these also jumped and clapped and smoked, only pale, ghostly, all color waned to grays, to shadows of individuals that history had rendered, that is: translated, bestowed, surrendered, melted to separate out impurities. I would have never imagined that many grays.
