Over the weekend, I was shocked to find out Anthony Veasna So, rising queer Khmer American literary star, had recently passed away at the age of 28. I had liked his short story in the New Yorker, “Three Women of Chuck’s Donuts”, and I was looking forward to reading Afterparties, his book of short stories forthcoming August of next year. To hear of his death was like hearing about the death of a cousin that had managed to thrive despite all odds, all the various impediments imposed by family and culture and society particular for Khmer Americans.
