What I found pleasure in today: a swan, flying in the early morning light. The feeling of brushed teeth, the taste of cake for breakfast, the remarkable yellow of dandelions growing in gravel. The gaze of my dog as I walked around the yard, and how elegant his legs looked, crossed below his rump. The drifting of bees as purposeful as the swift’s bounding flight. The surprise of an insight by Martine Franck in a faxed letter to John Berger: “What I like about photography is precisely the moment that cannot be anticipated; one must be constantly on the alert, ready to acclaim the unexpected.”
