This weather has me up the walls. Eating all the time, walking into storms at night, or drifting dazedly through dim rooms with permanently ink-stained fingers.*

Today: a break, calm and sunny, and the mother-in-law has left for a three-day trip. THREE DAYS! The dog doesn't know what to do with itself, like its human.

*due to leaky fountain pen; in disgust, I ordered and received a brass Kaweco sport fountain pen, ooh la! According to André Aciman, this is “the Volkswagen of pens, with a Jaguar engine.” It came in a small elegant tin, which a child might use to contain their humble treasures. Weighing 44 grams and likely to attain a patina as it ages (transforming with the vagaries of environment and the oil of my skin), it is a thing of sheer beauty. Even a talisman, perhaps, to protect me from procrastination, ill discipline, and lost thoughts. (One must hope!)
